I know, I mean I really understand, you want to jazz-up that flyer, that powerpoint, that report… but trust in me, clipart is SO not the way to go. I’ll let you know a little secret: Everyone knows it’s clipart.
Clipart does not make you appear creative, ingenious or cutting-edge. In fact, I might argue just the opposite. So, what to do? Here are a couple ideas to get your creative juices flowing so you can really make something with impact.
1. Try using text in a creative way, almost like a picture.
In MS Word and in Powerpoint, you can easily create a text box. Create one and type in a a couple keywords or a phrase from your text or words that correlate to your content. Then (and here’s the fun part!): make that text big and play with fun fonts you’ve never tried! Play until you like it. You can even get fancy by changing the color of the text and adding a background color to the text box by right clicking on the text box and selecting “format text box…”. The 1st couple times you may need to explore a lot of the options, so you know what you can do. But, I’m willing to bet you’ll have something really cool (and unique!) before you could’ve found a clipart image. 😉
2. Use actual photographs.
I only advise this option if you’re searching for something that you’re not going to be uber picky about and is relatively general, like: sunsets, beaches, food, couples, hands, bicycles and not so much for specific things like: monkeys flying kites, kids eating broccoli, bears riding bicycles – I think you get the idea. 😉 A few places to start looking for FREE images:
- http://stockvault.net/ (be cognizant because they have sponsored links to images you have to pay for)
- Flickr, do an advanced search and click the “Creative Commons” box (good practice to give a small credit to the flickr user): http://www.flickr.com/search/advanced/?
- You’re very own pictures! Yes, really! These can be the best to use, because they personalize what you’re creating and can help others relate to you.
Hope this inspires you to step beyond the clipart!
