I have a confession to make.
When I ask some one what they do and they start by saying, “I inspire…”, it drives me NUTS.
I was recently on a website for a health coach, who stated something like “I inspire women to feel their best”. So, she does what exactly?
Inspiration can come from anywhere, at anytime and can last a long time or a very short time.
Lots of people watch the “Biggest Loser” and feel “inspired” to start losing weight. After a few days, weeks or months of eating better and exercising without the insanely quick results people have on the show, most of them no longer feel “inspired” and they stop eating better and exercising.
So, what do they need? More inspiration? To be shamed about not having will power or motivation? If they have another bout of inspiration how long will it last? Will it actually help them create a healthier lifestyle or just start a yo-yo diet cycle?
No, they don’t need more inspiration. They need examples. They need empathy. They need help. They need someone to stick by them and remind them when the going gets tough (and it will) that they can persevere.
They someone to help them commit. Not just to a desire to be thinner. To commit to an entire new way of being in the world. A new way of showing up when all they want to do is quit after the first week.
What they really need is a much bigger than inspiration. When you say that you “inspire”, you’re not giving yourself credit for much of anything. You’re basically saying someone might get feeling to do something by working with you.
But when you tell people you’re going to help them DO things, their ears perk up. Because, you make real, positive difference to people by helping people do things. Because let’s be honest, you’re not hustling your ass off just to make a buck. You really do help people. Own it.
Stop being passive. I know you. I know you do more than “inspire”. So, why sell yourself short when what you really do is make a difference in people’s lives?
Here, I’ll go first: I don’t want to “inspire” with my design. I create real change for awesome people with my design.
Great point, Rachel! Why stop at Inspiration?! I help people with great ideas and wisdom become published authors. Inspiration? Just the beginning!
That’s right, Lisa!! And you know all about making a huge impact in individuals lives, helping them write and publish a books, something that requires much more than inspiration.
PS And your websites sure do create real change–I’ve had more sales than ever since you designed my sales pages!
That’s SO awesome!
Great information!!! Thanks for your wonderful informative blog.
